The DWID3 takes 20 place settings plus a fruit and vegetable basket in a 150 L tub, and the DWBB7 takes 17. A large family's day, or a dinner with guests, in one run.

Washes at 75°C, dries at up to 110°C

Hot enough to lift cooking oil off a plate, then hot enough to dry it without a towel mark. Both machines also dry on their own, so a hand-washed load or a batch of bottles dries without a second wash.

Sterilised, then kept that way

A high-temperature wash, a hot-air dry and a UVC lamp behind them both, which VATTI rates at up to 99.9% on the DWID3. Then up to 168 hours of ventilation, so a finished load waits dry rather than damp.

A brushless motor, and 55,000 Pa

Both machines run on a BLDC motor, which holds spray pressure at lower speed. The DWID3 uses it to drive a variable-pressure pump at up to 55,000 Pa through two telescopic spray arms that reach the corners of the tub, not only the circle in the middle.

Programmes for fruit, toys and bottles

Beyond the everyday cycles, both machines have programmes for fruit and vegetables, children's toys and feeding bottles, and a self-clean cycle for the machine itself. The DWBB7 has eight in all; the DWID3 has six main programmes and four more in the app.

Choosing a dishwasher in Malaysia

• 17-20place settings

  Size it by the meal, not by the kitchen

  A place setting is roughly what one person uses at a meal. Both VATTI dishwashers are big machines: 17 settings on the DWBB7, 20 plus a fruit and vegetable basket on the DWID3. VATTI counts a full DWID3 load at 130 pieces, among them eighteen rice bowls, nine noodle bowls and 36 pairs of chopsticks. That is a household of four or more, or a family that cooks for guests, washed once a day. For one or two people a compact machine is the better fit, and VATTI does not make one.

  Heat is what cuts through wok oil

  Both machines wash at 75°C. Water that hot lifts cooking oil off a plate instead of moving it around, and it is too hot for hands, which is the part hand washing cannot match however long you scrub. The DWBB7 then dries with 110°C air and the DWID3 with 105°C, so plates come out without towel marks.

  Dry between washes, in a humid kitchen

  A dishwasher left shut and damp is where the smell comes from, and a Malaysian kitchen gives it every chance. After the cycle both machines keep air moving through themselves for up to 168 hours. The DWID3 changes its air every three hours and runs its UVC lamp as it does, so a clean load left inside stays fresh for up to seven days with the door shut.

• Pots, not only plates

  Asian cooking dirties pots as much as plates, so look at the lower rack before the programme list. The DWID3's lower tines fold flat to take up to four pots at once, and one pull on its handle drops the rack to clear a pot up to 30 cm tall. The DWBB7 has an oil-intensive programme and one for big objects.

• Built in or freestanding

  A built-in machine goes into the cabinet run and gives the tidiest finish, which makes it the one to plan for in a kitchen being built or renovated. The DWID3 is fully integrated and 60 cm wide, made for a 600 x 780 x 580 mm cabinet opening, so measure the opening before you choose rather than after. A freestanding machine goes anywhere with a water point, a drain and a socket.

• Run it full, and scrape instead of rinsing

  A dishwasher earns its place on full loads. Scrape plates into the bin rather than rinsing them under the tap first: pre-rinsing is where the water people think they are saving actually goes. On the days a full load is not worth waiting for, both machines run a half load in the top or the bottom basket alone. The DWID3 also doses its own detergent, from a reservoir that lasts about two weeks.
